Treatment Of Immigrants

Added on by Chris Saad.

This week I’ve seen a number of posts in my feed explaining why immigrants are an economic or demographic net positive for a country.

I think people are missing the fact that most of the pushback against immigrants is not really about practical or pragmatic issues (although people pretend it is) - it’s about skin color and “culture”.

It’s about people wanting their country to stay white.

** Update to detail what *I* believe (from comments):

in general, I believe in a clean, clear and efficient path for immigrants that boasts a generous serving of empathy and recognition for our shared humanity.

I do NOT believe in the political narrative that pits “us” against “them” and pretends that crime, poverty or joblessness is the fault of the minority people (whoever they may be).

As for preserving culture: all culture is evolving all the time (in large part due to interactions with other cultures - either through direct contact or media). Therefore concepts like holding onto old cultural norms for the sake of tradition (a right-wing trope) or “cultural appropriation” (a left-wing freak out) are mostly distractions. The only time when this becomes a problem is in extreme cases when large groups of refugees flood in without a chance to assimilate or when people rip others off in a craven way (respectively).

That being said, almost by definition, refugees tend to undergo mass migrations only in cases of great strife in their homeland. It’s not by choice. But instead of solving the root cause (the strife in the foreign land), Politicians tend to focus on “othering” the desperate people to win cheap political points.

Finally: we’ve seen this play out countless times in the US. From the Irish to the Jews and now to the Muslims. Historic patterns are useful to keep in mind.

Bad Memory

Added on by Chris Saad.

Bad news: My memory is so crap that I can’t remember that sometimes I’ve already heard/done something

Good news: I’m so consistent that I usually act/react the same way anyway.

Just found out from my FB memories that I learned the word “sagacious” 3 years ago today. I took a screenshot of the definition and posted it on FB. Guess what? I learned it again yesterday (totally forgot about the first time) and also took a screenshot and put it on Facebook.

Hilarious

Living In The Future

Added on by Chris Saad.

One of the toughest relationships of my life has been the one with time.

I’ve always felt like I was living in the future, trying to drag the present (kicking and screaming) to a place I imagine in my head. Somewhat exhausting.

At the same time, I’ve always been hyper-aware of how little time I have to achieve my goals and to experience the things I want to experience. Part of it is being conscious of my inevitable death, but part of it is also based on some inexplicable belief that I may get very ill at around 40.

Yesterday I got another bought of the man-flu. Whenever I get it, I have a terrible night of nausea that really ruins my night/day. I can’t imagine having something more serious that lasts for a sustained period of time. A real illness that gets in the way of my agency and experience. It’s an ongoing fear that is part of the motivation behind everything I do.

An internal monologue of “Move fast. Hustle. Up-and-to-the-right. Don’t take the time and health for granted.”

Health, and time, are the most precious resources of all.

Appreciate what you have and get shit done.

"Hollywood Liberal Elites"

Added on by Chris Saad.

One of the most underrated forces acting on the geopolitical landscape of the world generally, and acting in support of American power specifically, over the last 50 years, is Hollywood movies.

They articulate, justify and/or glorify American values and narratives. Even when they're critical of America, American actions or American Narratives, they demonstrates a sense of self-reflection, freedom of expression and honesty in the face of often tragic missteps or flaws.

It's ironic that the far right hates the "hollywood liberal elites".

This kind of soft power has been unmatched in human history and is likely far, far more responsible for American leadership/influence than most people are aware.

Skepticism v. Real Insight

Added on by Chris Saad.

I love how patient and authoritative Dara is with Kara. I love when someone who’s never run something at scale pretends they understand how investment, innovation, and business works. Skepticism is often used as an easy substitute for real insight.

Also, I’d give anything to be a fly on the wall for the debates between Dara and Travis 🙂
